How to Decorate with a Blue Carpeted Room ( part I )

If you're wonted to neutral-colored carpet, decorating a room with blue carpet may seem like a serious challenge. However, depending on the shade of blue, you can actually choose from a variety of decorating schemes that either play down or emphasize the blue, depending on your preference. It often helps to consider the room that you're working with when decorating around a blue carpet, since you wouldn't necessarily want the same look in a dining room that you'd choose for a bedroom.

    Go Neutral

If your blue carpet is particularly bright or bold, decorating the rest of the room in neutral shades can help balance the look of any space, including a bedroom, living room or dining room. White, cream, gray or beige all work well as wall colors, particularly if the room is small, since pale walls reflect light and make the space feel larger. To keep the room from looking bland, add dimension with deeper accent shades, such as tan and taupe, for the furniture, window treatments, throw pillows and other accessories. If you prefer a richer shade, pair the blue carpet with dark neutrals like chocolate brown or charcoal to give your room a sophisticated, elegant look.

    Opt for Monochromatic

With its cool undertones, blue is a soothing color that can provide a calming vibe to a room. If your bedroom has blue carpeting, consider using it as the basis for a relaxing, monochromatic blue color scheme. Choose a light blue shade, such as sky or robin's egg for the walls, so the room isn't too dark. For the bedding, window coverings and other accessories, opt for deeper shades of blue, including cornflower, cobalt and navy. If you don't want to go totally blue with the room's design, incorporate white or ivory accents to add a crisp, bright look. Blue-and-white patterned accessories, such as throw pillows and pillow shams, can help tie the room together.

    Try a Coastal Look

If you like beach-inspired decor, use your blue carpet as the starting point for a coastal decorating scheme in your bedroom, living room or dining room. Choose a crisp white shade for the walls – you can even add beadboard wainscoting to give the room a cottage-like feel. Incorporate soft yellow accents with curtains, bedding or throw pillows to give the space a bright, sunny look. In a nautical design, blue and white stripes are big, so pair your blue carpet with a stripped sofa or bedspread. Natural materials also work well in a beach cottage-inspired room, so opt for wooden furniture with a natural finish and throw rugs in natural fibers like jute and sea grass.

    Create a Contrast

With blue carpeting in a dining room or living room, you might want to go for a bolder look. Pairing the carpet with contrasting shades provides a striking look that will definitely get your guests' attention. Orange is opposite blue on the color wheel, so it's an ideal shade when you want to make your carpet pop. If your carpeting is a light blue, use light shades of peach to highlight the blue. If your carpeting is a deeper blue, you can go with darker or brighter shades, including terra cotta or tangerine. Since the blue and the orange shades will be the focus of the room, keep the rest of the color palette simple with neutral accents of white, tan and brown.
